What is DNA?

Deoxyribonucleic Acid more commonly known as DNA is the hereditary material in humans and almost all other organisms. The molecular structure of DNA is likened to a twisted ladder made of two strands, known as a ‘helix’. The strands of DNA contain information in the form of a code, which in turn determines individual traits and characteristics. Half of a person’s DNA is inherited from their mother, and half is inherited from the father. There are four types of DNA building block and the order in which these occur is our genetic code.

How does the DNA testing process work?

Genetic tests are performed on a sample of blood, hair, skin, amniotic fluid or other tissue. The DNA test is performed by collecting buccal (cheek) cells found on the inside of a person’s cheek using a buccal or cheek swab. The cheek cell samples are taken to the laboratory where they are treated to release the DNA coding from the cells. The DNA is then introduced to an enzyme that duplicates the DNA, producing millions of copies ready for analysis.

How are the DNA samples taken?

DNA samples are taken by using the mouth swabs. We provide clients with a buccal or cheek swab to collect a sample of cheek cells, the cells are collected by the gentle rub of the swab inside of the mouth. These swabs are then placed inside individual envelopes which are sealed and marked with the relevant applicant’s details. Collecting the DNA sample is completely painless and will only take minutes to complete.

How much does it cost and how do I pay?

The price depends on the test you are selecting, there are always customer services advisors to inform you about our payment process. You can either supply credit card details with your sample or one of our customer services advisors will contact you for these before dispatch to the laboratories. You may also pay by cheque, bank draft or postal order, made payable to Smart DNA.

How does a paternity test work?

Paternity testing involves collecting and examining the DNA of a small sample of bodily fluid or tissue from a child and the alleged father. It identifies the unique genetic profile of each individual being tested. The genetic profile of a child is inherited partly from the father and partly from the mother. By comparing the child’s genetic profile with that of the alleged father, a paternity test can determine whether or not this person is the real biological father.

At what age can a child be tested?

Paternity DNA test can be performed at any age after birth. Please contact us for more information.

How much does a paternity test cost?

The cost of a home paternity test is N120,000. There are no extra fees.

What does the DNA sample collection kit contain?

Our sample collection kit contains 4 mouth swabs per applicant and labelled envelopes to place each DNA sample in after collection. Also included are step-by-step instructions on how to collect the DNA samples and a registration & consent form.

Why do people require immigration DNA test?

Immigration DNA tests can be needed for different reasons. In most cases, it is used to prove relation using birth records (such as birth certificates) or other such documents. However, there are cases where either individuals do not have access to these records (perhaps these do not exist in their country of origin) or the records they have access to, are not up to the standards required by the authority in question. In such cases, supporting their claims to an alleged biological relationship will need to be done by a DNA test.
